Winner named in apple art contest

Esteban Garibay, a graduate of the 2016 class of Sunnyside High School, Wenatchee, Wash., won the Grand Prize in Washington Apple Education Foundation's Year of the Apple Art Contest.

The 21st annual contest was sponsored by Dow AgroSciences, which will publish a 2017 calendar featuring Garibay's artwork, according to a news release.

Garibay will also receive $1,000 as part of the prize.

Second place winner Cyrille Villas and third place winner Madison Colvin will receive $500 and $250 prizes, respectively.

One-hundred thirty students submitted entries into the contest, which is open to all high school students in 10 counties across Washington.

The Washington Apple Education Foundation is Washington's tree fruit industry charity. The 2017 calendars featuring the winning artwork will be available for purchase at the Dow AgroSciences booth at the Washington State Tree Fruit Association's annual meeting Dec. 5-7 in Wenatchee.
