Tops opening stores in New York, New England

Tops Friendly Markets plans to open a half dozen stores in upstate New York and Massachusetts.

The stores originate from a recent purchase from Delhaize America's Hannaford Supermarkets and Quincy, Mass.-based Stop & Shop Supermarkets.

From Aug. 23-28, the Williamsville, N.Y.-based chain plans to open these stores:

  • Gardner, Mass.;
  • Carmel, N.Y.;
  • LaGrangeville, N.Y.;
  • New Paltz, N.Y.;
  • Rhinebeck, N.Y.; and
  • Wappingers Falls, N.Y.

Tops plans to feature an expanded weekly ad circular and plans to run the stores 24 hours a day.

For an effective transition, Tops plans to close the stores for 36 hours before the stores' scheduled openings, according to a news release.

"Having had the opportunity to personally meet with associates, customers, and speak to members of the community, we are already receiving a warm welcome which is exciting," Frank Curci, Tops' chairman and CEO, said in the release.

"We are looking forward to having these stores, the associates and the surrounding communities become part of the Tops family."

Tops operates 172 supermarkets and five locations operated by franchisees under the Tops banner in upstate New York, northern Pennsylvania, western Vermont and north-central Massachusetts.

The company employs more than 16,000 workers.
