Certified compostable cling film developed for fresh food
BASF and the Fabbri Group have developed what they call a sustainable solution for cling film used in fresh-food packaging, according to a news release.
Based on BASF’s certified compostable Ecovio, the release said Fabbri Group produces the highly transparent stretch film Nature Fresh.
Fruit and vegetables, meat and seafood can be wrapped manually or with automatic packaging equipment, according to the release.
Nature Fresh is food-contact approved according to U.S. and European standards, according to the release.
The film helps keep food fresh for a longer period of time when compared to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) alternatives used for cling film such as polyethylene (PE), according to the release.
After use, Nature Fresh can be composted together with any food waste in home compost or industrial compost according to national legislation, according to the release.
“Our certified compostable Ecovio enables the production of a cling film that prolongs shelf life of fresh food and at the same time can be composted after use together with organic waste,” Carsten Sinkel, global business development for biopolymers at BASF, said in the release.
