Fyffes pineapple farm is Rainforest Alliance sustainability certified

Fyffes Anexco pineapple farm in Costa Rica earned Sustainable Agriculture Standard certification by Rainforest Alliance.

That certification includes 1,100 workers, 8 million boxes of pineapples, and 8,000 acres of farmland and protected forest areas, according to a news release.

The alliance’s Sustainable Agriculture Standard certification has four principles: effective planning and management systems, biodiversity conservation, natural resource conservation and improved livelihoods.

Anexco received the certification after an internal evaluation that led to company changes, followed by a third-party audit and validation.

Fyffes Anexco workers are represented by a committee, and several of them are members of multiple unions, according to the release. The farm has received recognition for its health and safety management systems and is rolling out a gender equality pilot program. Transportation for farm workers is provided, and scholarships and school materials are provided to children in farm worker communities, according to the release.

To offset its carbon footprint with a reforestation program, 2,651 acres of land at the farm are in a conservation are to provide a habitat for 487 species of animals and plants.

The alliance is an international nonprofit organization that aims to protect forests, improve the livelihoods of farmers and forest communities, promote human rights, and mitigate and adapt to the climate crisis.
