Fresh Direct Produce Ltd., Vancouver, British Columbia, has been named one of Canada’s Best Managed companies for the ninth time.

Produce importer-wholesaler Fresh Direct has five distribution centers in Vancouver, Victoria and Calgary, according to a news release.

In the past year, Fresh Direct acquired British Columbia businesses Emperor Specialty Foods and wholesaler/fresh-cut processor Islands West Manufacturers.

“We continue to grow and expand our geographic reach and product offerings to support our loyal vendors and customers who are the cornerstone of our success,” Davis Yung, president and co-founder, said in the release.

Hammond, Kennedy, Whitney & Co. (HKW), a middle-market private equity firm, owns Fresh Direct Produce, and Yung said the company is “excited to explore additional expansion opportunities across Canada.”

The award is sponsored by Deloitte, CIBC, Canadian Business Magazine, Queen's Smith School of Business and the TMX Group.
