The Onion House sees lower acreage

The Weslaco, Texas-based Onion House has fewer acres planted this year than last, said Don Ed Holmes, owner.

“Acreage is down 10% from a year ago, but that has to do with our Mexican acreage being up,” he said.

The Onion House has about 600 acres this year, which is down from 1,000 in 2000, Holmes said.

A smaller marketing window has had something to do with the reduction in acreage, Holmes said.

“You’re still trying to get the same amount of onions into a smaller box,” he said.

“We used to try to start in early March; now, it’s April, one week in March and one week in May. You’re trying to get more onions through the same time window.”
