Kroger donates $50,000 to Brighter Bites to fight waste, hunger
The Kroger Co.’s Zero Hunger | Zero Waste Foundation has donated $50,000 to Brighter Bites to help provide access to fresh fruits and vegetables and nutrition education.
The grant will help Brighter Bites expansion efforts nationwide, including an expansion in Houston and Dallas, two cities in which the organization provides programs.
Rich Dachman, Brighter Bites CEO, said in a news release that the Kroger Foundation grant will address the relationship between food insecurity and waste.
“Through this partnership, Brighter Bites will be able to redirect more produce into the hands of those that need It — mitigating food waste while feeding and teaching healthier habits to the families we serve,” he said in the release.
Brighter Bites works to decrease food waste by increasing recovery of produce from growers, distributors and food banks, as well as at the consumer level by teaching families how to use fresh produce, according to the release.
“We celebrate their dedication to education and outreach efforts, and we look forward to working with their innovative team to help achieve our mission of creating communities free of hunger and waste,” Sunny Reelhorn Parr, executive director of the Zero Hunger | Zero Waste Foundation, said in the release.
Kroger employees will be volunteering at Brighter Bites program sites in Houston and Dallas, according to the release.
Overall, Brighter Bites plans to enroll more than 30,000 children and their families through 133 schools and 48 summer camps in the eight Brighter Bites cities, according to the release.
