Record meth seizure found in tomato, pepper load
Arizona Customs and Border Protection officers made a record methamphetamine seizure when a commercial truckload of tomatoes and peppers attempted to cross into the U.S.
CBP officers found 600 packages of the drug in a “non-factory floor compartment” of the trailer, a record seizure for methamphetamine in Arizona, according to the agency. The 690 pounds have a street value of about $690,000 according to a news release.
The truck was crossing at the Nogales Port of Entry when a narcotics detecting canine alerted officers to the potential contraband in the load. It was referred to a secondary inspection at the Nogales Mariposa Cargo Facility, and the drug was found when the peppers and tomatoes were removed.
The 34-year-old driver, a Mexican national, was detained, along with the tractor-trailer, according to the release.
“CBP Officers are focused on our highest priorities which includes stopping the flow of hard narcotics such as methamphetamine and opioids from entering our country,” Micheal Humphries, area port director, said in the release.
