New York City schools are offering three free meals a day to all New Yorkers at 400 locations starting April 3.
The food-relief effort is a way to fulfill the needs of New Yorkers stemming from school closures and unemployment since the new coronavirus, COVID-19, took ahold of the city, making New York State the epicenter of the pandemic in the U.S.
The free grab-and-go meals will be available at designated “Meal Hubs” from 7:30-11:30 a.m. for children and their families and 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for adults specifically.
An alert went out at 10:26 a.m. to people who signed up for Notify NYC text alerts.
At one of the hubs, a Brooklyn, N.Y., elementary school, recipients were asked to stand just outside the door.
Inside, a few masked police officers sat at a table giving directions, and two women wearing aprons, plastic gloves and masks stood ready by a shelf full of soft cooler bags that appeared to be filled with meals.
The free lunch grab-and-go menus in April include carrots, marinated green beans, chopped salads, corn salads and New York apples, according to the city's Department of Education website.
“No one will be turned away at any time,” according to the online announcement, and no registration, identification or documentation is required. All three meals are picked up at the same time, and parents and guardians can pick up meals for their children.
No dining space will be available because meals must be eaten off premises.
