Avocados continued to outperform average sales for other fruit and the produce category in general, according to the Hass Avocado Board’s latest data from research firm IRI scan data.

The Hass Avocado Board, citing more volatility in the market due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is providing weekly updates on how the fruit is performing at retail across the country.

The most recent IRI information, for the week ending April 5, continues to show avocados are selling more than they did compared to 2019 sales for the same period. The increase in avocado sales is higher than total store perimeter, fresh produce and fresh fruit increases, when each of those are compared to the same sales in 2019.

For the four weeks ending March 29, avocados saw a 21.5% increase compared to 2019, according to IRI numbers.

According to the board’s report, the dollar sales increases from 2019 were:

  • Week ending April 5: 19.6%;
  • Week ending March 29: 17.8%;
  • Week ending March 22: 21.1%; and
  • Week ending March 15: 27.4%.
