Indoor, vertical grower Kalera to add new facility in Atlanta

Indoor, vertical grower Kalera, Orlando, Fla., plans to open a new growing facility in Atlanta in early 2021.

The facility is the next step in Kalera’s domestic and international expansion plan, according to a news release.

By placing farms directly in the communities served, Kalera is able to supply national retailers and foodservice distributors with local product.

The company’s announcement of the facility comes fewer than two months after Kalera opened its second Orlando farm. The Atlanta facility will be more than double the size of the Orlando farms and with a capacity to produce 11 million heads of lettuce annually. Kalera uses automated, data-driven, hydroponic production methods.

“At this critical time, we are excited to be a reliable, year-round source for non-GMO, pesticide-free leafy greens, lettuces and microgreens,” Cristian Toma, chief technology officer, said in the release.
