Bagging up at Del Rey Avocado
The core of the Peruvian avocado season will be from June into September for Fallbrook, Calif.-based Del Rey Avocado Co., said Donny Lucy, vice president of procurement and East Coast sales.
“We anticipate excellent quality,” Lucy said, adding that he was not aware of any adverse weather conditions in the Peruvian growing areas.
Like other suppliers, the company has experienced an increase in demand for bagged avocados.
“We do a lot of bags,” Lucy said. “There definitely has been an increase since COVID.”
He expected the emphasis on the bag programs to continue with Peruvian avocados.
“The fruit lends itself well to being bagged because of how well it holds up,” he said.
Lucy said quality of Peruvian-grown avocados has increased over the years, and the season has expanded.
“Now we’re able to do more sustained programs from the end of May to the beginning of October, in some cas-es,” he said.
The longer season allows for more flexibility with retail programs.
“A retailer can go into a Peru program for three months and not worry about whether there are going to be supply interruptions,” Lucy said.
