Stemilt offering more organic apples across varieties
Stemilt Growers has much higher organic volumes in many of its apple varieties this season.
The Wenatchee, Wash.-based company expects its overall organic apply supply to be up 55% from the 2016 crop, including a 250% increase in organic Honeycrisp volume, a 90% increase in organic fuji volume, a 60% increase in organic Piñata volume, and 30% increases in organic Pink Lady and organic gala volumes.
“Organics are booming across grocery, and apples are among the top three organic fruits for the produce department,” Roger Pepperl, marketing director, said in a news release. “Growing modern apples like Honeycrisp organically allows us to help retailers cater to their best customer in the produce department, the organic shopper, and do so with our high standards of ‘world famous’ fruit.”
Pepperl suggests that retailers run promotions on bulk organic apples to drive sales in the late fall and winter.
Stemilt plans to continue to increase its organic volume in coming years. Nearly 30% of its apple production is organic currently.
