Load of broccoli stopped with $16 million of meth aboard

Customs and Border Protection officers stopped a load of broccoli containing $16.1 million of methamphetamine as it crossed into Texas.

The semi load of fresh broccoli was stopped on Aug. 3 at the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge. A Customs and Border Protection officer referred the commercial shipment for a secondary inspection, according to a news release. A non-intrusive imaging system inspection revealed packages of suspected drugs hidden in the trailer.

The inspection carried over to Aug. 4 as officers removed 1,561 packages of alleged methamphetamine, weighing almost 805 pounds.

The driver, a 51-year-old male Mexican citizen, was arrested and Homeland Security Investigation continues with the investigation, according to the release.

“This is a substantial amount of hard narcotics that our officers have detected and seized from drug trafficking organizations attempting to smuggle these drugs across our border,” Carlos Rodriguez, port director of the Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry, said in the release.
