Smurfit Kappa is offering the BanaBag as a paper-based solution for bagging bananas at the farm level.

The Banabag is 100% paper based and renewable, recyclable and biodegradable, according to a news release.

“At Smurfit Kappa we are oriented towards the innovation and development of paper-based products that take care of the environment and help our customers in the improvement of their processes and products,” Iñaki Urdaci, marketing insight manager of Smurfit Kappa, said in the release.

“We have become allies of the agricultural sector with solutions like BanaBag and we hope to continue contributing to better results for farmers in the Americas and Europe who want to be sustainable.”

BanaBag acts as a natural insulator of the bunch so that it does not overheat the banana like plastic bags, according to the release.

BanaBag is designed for banana producers who are supplying international markets where consumers are demanding sustainable products with traceable production and supply chains, according to the release.

The product is compostable according to EN 13432 regulatory standards and could be used as a compost for the soil.

One banana exporter said BanaBag fits his operation well.

“Our job is to properly handle the fruit in the production process so that it arrives healthy and in the best quality conditions at its final international destination,” Louis Hesselholt, manager of Dominique Banana in Santa Marta,

Colombia, said in the release.

The BanaBag matches with the values of organic banana producers and contributes to the goal of reducing plastic waste, he said.
