Sage Fruit Co. talks packaging, partnership with Apeel Sciences
Yakima, Wash.-based Sage Fruit Co. focused its virtual booth at the Produce Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit on the company’s pear program, its new grab-and-go paper bags and the firm’s partnership with Apeel Sciences.
"Additionally, we highlighted newer varieties of apples including Smitten and Cosmic Crisp,” said Kaci Komstadius, social media and consumer marketing manager.
At the virtual exhibit, a video from Sage Fruit said the company has been testing Apeel’s plant-based coating on numerous varieties of apples and has seen extremely positive results as a way to also extend the shelf life at retail. The company said it found that organic apples treated with Apeel retain more moisture on the supermarket shelf than non-Apeel treated organic apples, and the shelf-life for Apeel fruit can reach up to 40 days.
On the company’s website, Sage Fruit reviews its Cosmic Crisp apple program.
