Dole Fresh Vegetables recalls romaine after E. coli test in Michigan

Dole Fresh Vegetables Inc. is recalling organic romaine hearts after a sample tested positive for E. coli in Michigan.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall and it is not related to the current E. coli outbreaks being investigated by the Food and Drug Administration, according to a news release. The products were harvested almost a month ago and should not be available for retail sale at this time.

The recall notice from Dole, posted on the FDA’s recalled products website, was issued Nov. 21.

The recall affects these products:

  • Dole Organic Romain Hearts, 3-pack, with a Universal Produce Code of 0-71430-90061-1, with English/French labeling, with harvest dates of Oct. 23 and Oct. 26; and
  • Wild Harvest Organic Romaine Hearts, 12-ounce bags with UPC 7-11535-50201-2, and harvest dates of Oct. 23 and Oct. 26.

They were shipped to Arizona, Hawaii, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota and Virginia.

A package of the three-pack romaine yielded a positive result for pathogenic non-O157 E.coli STEC (Shiga-toxin-produce E. coli) by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, according to the recall notice.
