USDA purchases millions of pounds of apples
The U.S. Department of Agriculture is purchasing 2.18 million pounds of apples from three suppliers for child nutrition and other food assistance programs this year.
The USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service reported it will purchase the apples for almost $804,000. The purchase award refers to “bulk apples for further processing.”
Winning bids went to:
- Farm Fresh First LLC, Oakfield, N.Y., 673,200 pounds for $382,636;
- Jack Brown Produce, Sparta, Mich., 1.27 million pounds for $345,312; and
- Peterson Farms, Shelby, Mich., 237,600 pounds for $76,032.
The apples were purchased on an f.o.b. destination basis, and deliveries are to be made from April 1 through the end of June, according to the purchase award document dated Jan. 11. The USDA solicited another 1.72 million pounds of apples, but no bids were placed for the remaining apples.
