California drives avocado sales
California was the big driver of avocados sales early this year, according to Hass Avocado Board statistics.
According to retail sales data for the four weeks ending Jan. 24, the California region dollar sales increased 11.3%, making it the fastest-growing region in the U.S., according to a news release. This growth added $3.7 million in incremental sales for the avocado category.
The California region held a 19% share of total U.S. dollar sales but drove 48% of total incremental sales growth, according to the release.
Retail data showed San Diego helped drive sales in the California region as the fastest-growing market, with sales up 26.7%. Los Angeles added the largest incremental dollar sales with a gain of $2.4 million.
For the four-week period, U.S. avocado volume grew 13%, while dollars increased 2.3%, according to the release.
