Older, richer consumers best consumers of lemons

According to The Packer’s Fresh Trends 2021, 43% of surveyed consumers said they purchased fresh lemons in the past year.

lemonsFresh Trends survey data shows higher-income consumers were the greatest buyers of lemons, with 52% of shoppers who earned $100,000 or more annually indicating they purchased lemons, compared with just 30% of consumers who earned $25,000 or less, 39% of consumers who earned $25,000 to $50,000, and 47% of those who earned $50,000 to $99,000.

In terms of gender, 45% of women surveyed for Fresh Trends 2021 said they purchased lemons in the past year, compared with 40% of men.

Shoppers with multiple kids at home were the biggest purchasers of lemons, according to Fresh Trends 2021.  At 53%, consumers with three kids at home were the biggest buyers, compared to 45% with no kids at home, 37% with two kids, 38% with one kid and 40% with kids at home, in general.

Western U.S. and Northeast consumers are the biggest buyers of lemons, according to Fresh Trends, with 49% of Northeast consumers saying they purchased lemons in the past year, compared with 45% of consumers in the West, 36% of consumers in the Midwest and 41% of consumers in the South.

By age group, older consumers were the biggest buyers, according to Fresh Trends 2021. Fifty-two percent of consumers 60 or older said they purchased fresh lemons in the past year, compared with 46% of consumers age 50-59, 38% of those 40-49, 36% of those 30-39, and 39% of those 18-29. lemons
