Produce companies take variety of approaches to environmental sustainability

Water conservation is the top way that produce companies surveyed by The Packer address environmental sustainability, but the list doesn’t end there.

Asked the question, “What are some of the ways your company has addressed environmental sustainability?” about 30 who took the survey indicated these responses:

  • Water conservation: 89%;
  • Soil health: 64%;
  • Measuring carbon footprint: 61%; 
  • Solar power: 50%; and 
  • More eco-friendly packaging: 46%.

In the “other” box, respondents also listed:

  • Integrated pest management;
  • Reducing waste in supply chains;
  • Organic farming;
  • Zero waste;
  • SoliPoints: carbon offsets;
  • Inform and let people decide how sustainability is profitable to them;
  • Conversion from clamshell to top film for plastic reduction and replacement of plastic with paper where practical; and
  • Certification for Zero Waste, SCS Sustainably Grown Certification, BEE Better Certification and Ethical Charter.
