Farm Share donates 51 million pounds of produce in Florida
Homestead, Fla.-based Farm Share Inc. donated 51 million pounds of produce to fight hunger in Florida, breaking last year’s record of only 40 million pounds.
Local growers and produce brokers help the cause by donating unsold crops they typically throw out or plow back into the ground, according to a news release.
Farm Share partners with nonprofits, food pantries, elected officials and law enforcement to help distribute the fresh produce to families across the state.
Farmers who donate can receive a federal tax deduction of up to 200% of their sold crop’s cost, encouraging more farmers to not waste their crops, according to the release.
