Growers march to their own tune on sustainability
More than one-third of growers feel like they are the ones who are setting their sustainability standards.
The Packer’s Sustainable Insights Survey asked the question, “Who sets the sustainability standards you follow?”
The results showed that retailers and consumers ranked down the list in terms of who growers feel set sustainability standards. Answers:
- You as a grower: 37.61%;
- Federal government (USDA): 13.25%;
- Local government (state department of ag): 12.39%;
- Retailers: 8.97%;
- Third-party groups: 7.26%;
- Consumers: 7.26%;
- Co-op: 4.27%;
- Trade association: 3.85%;
- Ag input suppliers: 3.42%; and
- Other: 1.71%
Other responses were:
- University research that is not based on politics;
- The media repeating activists’ content;
- No one; and
- Sustainably Grown Certification.
