Schnucks is clear market leader in St. Louis market
Shelby Market Share data for 2021 shows Schnucks is the clear market leader in the region that includes the Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky markets of Cape Girardeau, Carbondale-Marion, Champaign-Urbana, Danville, Decatur, Evansville, Owensboro, Springfield, St. Louis and Terre Haute.
Shelby data shows Schnuck Markets with a market share of 27.39%, with 107 stores fueling sales of $3.33 billion on an annual basis. The company said it now offers curbside pickup in 82 of its stores.
In late August, Schnucks announced an industry-first chainwide expansion with Simbe Robotics. Building on previous successful expansions, the multi-year full-scale roll-out will bring Tally robots to all 111 Schnucks locations across the U.S., making Schnucks the first grocer in the world to utilize AI-powered inventory management technology at scale, according to the company.
Schnucks first piloted Tally in July 2017 and expanded to additional stores in 2018 and 2020. Tally traverses store aisles up to three times per day and autonomously captures on-shelf data including inventory position, price accuracy and promotional execution, according to the company.
In other news from the chain, a new “Schnucks Fresh” store in Jasper, Ind., opened on Aug. 18.
A new format for Schnucks, the leased 18,000-square-foot store will include a heavy focus on fresh departments such as produce, meat, seafood, deli and bakery, according to the chain.

Dierbergs Markets was third in the Shelby rankings at 9.47% market share. Dierbergs, according to Shelby, had 31 stores generating $1.15 billion in sales.
The St. Louis-based chain planned to host its annual Mega Hiring event on Sept. 15 with a goal of filling more than 300 immediate employment opportunities at production facilities, corporate office and all stores.
