Monte Vista Potato Growers reports strong outlook

Monte Vista Potato Growers Co-op Association expects a strong quality crop of San Luis Valley potatoes, said Jason Tillman, sales manager.

The company mostly grows russets and yellow potatoes, he said.
Early-season hail in July may have held back potato sizes for some fields, Tillman said, but the price outlook for the season is positive.
“I think the crop is promising,” he said.

Harvest is expected to finish up about Oct. 5, he said.

Since last year, Monte Vista Potato has marketed most of its potatoes through RPE Inc., he said, describing the relationship as a good partnership.

Retail demand has been strong, while Tillman said foodservice demand continues its slow recovery.

“Foodservice demand is still a little sluggish,” he said. “I really wish it could pick up a little more, but we will get there.”
