Fruittrade 2021 looks at trends and future of Chilean fruit

The first meeting of the Chilean fruit industry summoned more than 500 attendees in person and reached nearly 10,000 views via streaming, in its two days of panels and specialized talks on the sector.  

With 37 activities that brought together more than 500 attendees at CasaPiedra, and which had close to 10,000 views on the streaming channel, it was developed with the enthusiasm of the expected reunion, the first massive event of the fruit industry in times of pandemic, the National Convention of Fruit Producers of Chile Fruittrade 2021, organized by the National Federation of Fruit Producers of Chile and ProChile, last Tuesday, September 28 and Wednesday, September 29 at the events center.

In what has been a complex year for national fruit growing, marked by the critical employment situation in the agricultural world and the consequences of climate change such as water scarcity, Fruittrade 2021 was the epicenter of dissemination of these issues, where Producers from different regions of the country, authorities, exhibitors, researchers and actors in the field were able to share in two full days, from 9.30 in the morning to 6 in the afternoon, in two equipped rooms. Throughout the event, producers were able to get closer and generate contact networks with the exhibiting companies that participated with their stands, strengthening the industry.

“Adaptation of Fruit Growing to Social, Economic and Climate Change” was the topic of the plenary session at the opening of the event, led by the president of Fedefruta, Jorge Valenzuela, together with the Minister of Agriculture, María Emilia Undurraga; the Undersecretary of Labor and Social Welfare, Fernando Arab; the national director of ProChile, Lorena Sepúlveda; the Manager of Studies and Public Policies of Banco Santander, Claudio Soto; the president of the National Society of Agriculture, Cristián Allendes and Alejandro Segundo Steilen, union leader.

First day: a look at the Asian markets, water, economy and citrus
The event started on the morning of Tuesday, September 28, analyzing the growing commercial opportunities of fruit growing in the Asian market, through four talks. “From the Chilean Orchard to the Chinese Table: what you should know about the export process to the Chinese Market”, on the importance of Hong Kong as a supply center in Asia, the Economic Outlook of the ASEAN market for Chilean Fruit and the Opportunities for the fruit Chile in the Japanese market were the specific topics of this cycle.

The first day continued with the panel “Analysis of the Water Crisis, from the Macro to the Micro”, moderated by the editor of Revista del Campo, Patricia Vildósola and which brought together five experts in the field. Then, in the afternoon, Isabel Quiroz, Executive Director of iQonsulting, moderated the panel “Triple impact on fruit growing: What is needed for Chile to be 100% sustainable in its export fruit offer”, with an Introduction, Status of Art and Triple Impact. In addition, this cycle brought together three technical talks on Sustainable business models in fruit growing, based on sustainable certifications. In parallel, three seminars were developed on the analysis of the citrus season in the United States and the Chinese market, evolving scenarios and new varieties of kiwis and citrus,

Agricultural work, technologies, table grapes, cherries, nuts and stone fruits on the second day of # Fruittrade2021

On Wednesday September 29, the second day of #Fruittrade2021, he began by analyzing the labor situation in agriculture and the scope of the use of technologies for the future, with the talk “Current and future panorama of the availability of workers for agriculture.” The efficient use of technologies in fruit growing, the current Migration Law and its impact on national agriculture, were the other topics of this cycle.

Then, three experts talked about the Fourth Smart Industrial Revolution and how digitization impacts current agricultural activity, both in the productive stage, in crops and yields. At the same time, six talks dedicated exclusively to cherries were presented in room 2, where producers and attendees could learn about everything related to this crop: the latest trends, current and future challenges, detection of phytovirus, importance of virus in export , new phytopathological agents and varietal alternatives.

In the afternoon, a series of technical talks on table grapes and stone fruits was held that touched on topics such as: climatic variability, how it affects table grapes, how to deal with botrytis and genetic improvement. Closing the annual event of the national fruit growing, experts shared a productive and commercial analysis to face the nut season; chestnut as a sustainable alternative for southern Chile; the phytosanitary aspects of the European hazelnut in the world and, finally, the genetic improvement of nectarines.
