Kwik Lok introduces first sustainable closure in Japan

(Eco-Lok Label by Kwik-Lok)

Kwik Lok Corp. has announced the availability of Eco-Lok, the first sustainable closure, in Japan. The closure is made of more than 10% biomass materials and requires 10% fewer greenhouse gasses to manufacture, according to a news release.

Eco-Lok’s biomass material, NuPlastiQ, is a proprietary technology from BioLogiQ. The material converts plant-based carbohydrates, such as corn and potatoes, to a completely natural and renewably sourced plant-based resin that requires less fuel to manufacture, according to the release.

NuPlastiQ, the company said, helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and overall petroleum-based material use.

Eco-Lok has been certified with the Biomass Mark by the Japan Organics Recycling Association, a General Incorporated Association providing information, assessment, and monitoring the standard of biomass materials in products such as packaging, daily products, and others, according to the release.

Eco-Lok has the same reliable performance specifications and features as Kwik Lok closures, the company said. The closures are printable, reusable, and metal detector compatible.

In addition, the company said the closures are completely interchangeable with Kwik Lok’s previous closures and compatible with existing Kwik Lok machinery.

Eco-Lok has been marketed in the U.S. since its launch in 2019, and the release stated that Eco-Lok has contributed to the reduction of CO2 emissions by an equivalent of over 123,993 greenhouse gasses driven in miles by the average car or over 54,976 pounds of coal burned.

Kwik Lok aims to reduce its carbon footprint by 20% by 2025 and to have 50% of global sales be of sustainable products by 2025, according to the release.

“As a company, we take the responsibility of our impact on the environment seriously and Eco-Lok is a testament to our commitment to reduce plastics and lessen carbon emissions worldwide,” Don Carrell, CEO of Kwik Lok, said in the release.
