How did you get your start in the produce industry?

It was a referral from a friend whose father was a partner of a produce wholesaler. I joined Van-Whole Produce shortly after graduating from university.

What roles have you held during you career?

I worked for Van-Whole Produce for 10 years from 1992-2002 and had been involved in sales, import, buying, logistics, marketing and business development.

How would you describe your current role?

As the CEO and president of the Fresh Direct Produce Group of companies, I lead and work with our dedicated team to continue our growth and expansion to improve our service to our customers across Canada.

What do you hope to accomplish/contribute through that role?

We continue to make a healthy difference to everyone who’s impacted by our work: end consumers, customers, vendors, staff and families. It’s a platform that I want to use to spread more positive energy and love to a world that has become more divisive.

What industry groups are you involved with?

I have been on the board of directors of the Canadian Produce Marketing Association since 2011 and was the chair of CPMA last year, leading our first ever virtual convention because of the pandemic. I have been on the CPMA Education and Marketing committee for many years and currently on the Executive and Leadership committee. I served on the PMA Audit committee for a number of years both as a member and the chair. I was on the board of BC Food and Beverage Association and had also involved in a few food waste and food hub think tanks.

What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?

Fresh Direct Produce has been selected and re-qualified each year as one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies since 2011. It’s an achievement that belongs to the entire dedicated and amazing team of the company.

What does leadership mean to you?

Leadership comes with privilege and responsibility. I truly believe leaders need to have a servant mentality. Leaders are fortunate to be in a position of influence and we should take this opportunity to make this world a slightly better place when we can.

Who are some of your industry mentors?

My first boss, Jason Du, and John Anderson from Oppy. Jason gave me the opportunity, guidance and autonomy to try many things at Van-Whole Produce. John has been an inspiration for his entrepreneurial acumen and corporate culture he created at Oppy. John’s dedication and commitment to the industry and the longevity of his contribution inspires me on the possibility of our potential.

What's a little-known or fun fact about you?

I was once ranked first in high jump in Hong Kong when I was 16. I tried to pick up track and field again and competed in Masters a few years ago, but my knees could no longer handle the pounding. I guess the extra 25 pounds I gained over the years didn’t help either. ?

What's your favorite efficiency hack?

I have to admit I’m not the most organized person, but I’m determined to follow through on unfinished tasks, which usually saves me a lot of time from further procrastination.

If you had to pick one fruit or vegetable to eat every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Oranges.
