How did you get your start in the produce industry?

I started my career in 1983 as a management trainee at National Grocers, a division of Loblaw Cos., in Chatham, Ontario, after graduating from University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering.

What roles have you held during you career?

• Loblaw Cos., 1983 – 1993: Management trainee, inventory control supervisor, distribution analyst, distribution manager, director of distribution administration, senior director of wholesale services.
• Aikenhead’s Home Improvement Warehouse, 1993-1994: Vice president of logistics
• Shoppers Drug Mart, 1994 – 1997: Vice president of logistics
• Sobeys Inc., 1997 – 2005: Senior vice president of logistics and engineering
• New Breed Corporations, 2005 – 2010: Senior vice president of operations
• Produce Marketing Association, 2010 – present: Vice president of supply chain efficiencies and vice president of supply chain and sustainability

How would you describe your current role?

I monitor and forecast trends, design related products, services and educational events relating to sustainability and the fresh produce and floral supply chains for PMA members.

I serve as staff lead to the industry-wide Produce Traceability Initiative and lead all data, standards and sustainability initiatives for PMA.

What do you hope to accomplish/contribute through that role?

I hope to facilitate the enablement of efficiencies of moving the cases of fresh produce and floral and the associated data from the point of harvest through to the retail store, foodservice operations or fulfillment centers. I also hope to assist and inspire our industry to implement sustainable initiatives and communicate their successes.

What has been the most meaningful part of working at PMA?

Meeting and working with the best people on the planet. The produce industry is very personable and works well together to improve the entire industry.

What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?

I am most proud of the positive influence I have had on many people’s career development. My proudest moments have been when people working for me have been promoted.

What does leadership mean to you?

Leadership to me means unlocking the full potential in others to accomplish a common goal.

Who are some of your industry mentors?

• David Poirier, who I reported to for the majority of my tenure at Loblaw Cos.
• Jim Dickson, who is the current chairman of Empire Co. Ltd., the parent company of Sobeys. Jim was one of the 7 bosses I had at Sobeys.
• Dr. Bob Whitaker and Dr. Max Teplitski, my two bosses at PMA.

What’s a little-known or fun fact about you?

I have completed NASCAR racing school twice.
