USDA announces nearly $6M in citrus purchases for nutrition programs

The USDA has announced a combined purchase of more than 440,000 cartons of fresh oranges and grapefruit for distribution to nutrition programs.

The purchases were made on an fob destination basis, with deliveries to be made from Feb. 7 to Sept. 28.

In the description of the purchase award, the USDA said it purchased 205,860 cartons of fresh grapefruit for prices ranging from $16.66 to $38.56 per carton, with a total purchase amount of $5.1 million.

Orange purchases totaled 234,954 cartons for prices ranging from $15.19 to $41.27 per carton, the USDA said. Total announced purchases of grapefruit totaled $5.95 million, according to the USDA summary.
