SunFed names president and CEO

Rio Rico, Ariz.-based SunFed has named Craig Slate as president and CEO.

Slate took over the role Aug. 31 after co-founder Danny Mandel retired, according to a news release.

“I am proud to have Craig carry our company’s passion, commitment, and focus on excellence, into this next phase of growth for SunFed,” Mandel said in the release. “Twenty-three years has been a long, but exciting time. We have constantly worked to improve the lives of our growers and customers.”

Slate comes to SunFed with 26 years of industry experience. He began his produce career in sales for Chiquita Brands, eventually becoming director of foodservice, product innovation and alternative channels, the release said.

Following his 14 years at Chiquita, he worked for IFCO Systems in supply chain. He then joined SunFed in 2014 as vice president of sales and marketing.

In his new role, Slate will focus on continuing the company’s growth and expansion efforts.

“We are assessing and looking to expand our current operations — a path which we have already begun to pave,” Slate said in the release.

The company has a three-point plan in place for growing the company. Part one focuses on its grower base, part two will involve new category projects and part three will focus on marketing and customers.

“As we look to this new era at SunFed, Craig’s transition to president and CEO will benefit the company’s stakeholders, from growers and the trade, to retailers and employees,” Matt Mandel, vice president of operations, said in the release. “As we continue to evolve, Craig will push us further and harder with even more focus. We are opening ourselves to a wealth of opportunities and an even more exciting road ahead.”
