Gourmet Garage opened its fourth New York City store, focusing on fresh and accessibly priced food based on responses to a West Village neighborhood survey.

Visitors to the new market, 585 Hudson Street, will discover a varied selection across two grocery floors – a new bi-level store model for Gourmet Garage, according to a news release. Fresh prepared and affordably priced fine foods are on the Market Level first floor, along with organic produce, cut fruit, salads, charcuterie, hot food and bakery options.

The Chef’s Basement lower floor has pantry staples and groceries including leading national brands.

Customers can shop in-store or online with options for home delivery within two hours. The store offers digital coupons that can be clipped and downloaded from the Gourmet Garage app.

Including three generations of grocers, the Sumas family owns and operates the four locations through Village Super Market Inc.

“We want shoppers to feel like this is their neighborhood market,” Perry Blatt, a third-generation grocer with Gourmet Garage, said in the release. “If there is something you want that we don’t have, please tell us.”

In planning for the store, staff asked local residents what they wanted in a neighborhood market. Residents told planners that fresh foods and accessible price points were important. The new store reflects those needs: Gourmet coffee is $2 a cup, a freshly prepared sandwich can be less than $10 and organic bananas are less than 79 cents a pound.

Founded in 1981 as the importer and distributor Flying Foods International, Gourmet Garage supplied high-end restaurants and chefs in New York and other major cities. Years later, the first Gourmet Garage retail location opened in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood, to bring restaurant-quality ingredients to all New Yorkers.

In celebration of the grand opening in the West Village, Gourmet Garage made donations to four local organizations that were recommended by West Village residents: City Harvest, The Center (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community Center), Friends of Bleecker Street Playground and the New York Public Library.

Gourmet Garage also helps those facing food insecurity in New York City through a partnership with City Harvest to donate fresh food from the new West Village store to the food rescue organization.
