APHIS establishes Medfly quarantine in Los Angeles County
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has quarantined an area in Los Angeles County after finding multiple Mediterranean fruit flies there.
Twelve adult Medflies and 55 larvae have been identified from 12 residential sites since mid-August, according to a notice from APHIS. One fly was confirmed Aug. 17, and two more were found Aug. 30, prompting the quarantine. Other flies and larvae have been detected since then.
Eighty-nine square miles in Los Angeles County, in the Sun Valley area, are subject to the quarantine.
Along with the California Department of Food and Agriculture and the office of the Los Angeles County Commissioner, APHIS is taking action to keep the fly from spreading to other areas of the country, according to the notice.
