USDA seeks comments on draft pest risk assessment for Brazilian papayas
The USDA is seeking comments on a draft pest risk assessment that would expand Brazil’s regions approved to ship papayas to the U.S.
The 39-page assessment describes potential pests associated with the commodity, according to the USDA.
In 2021, U.S. imports of Brazilian papayas totaled $1.59 million, down about 25% from $2.11 million in 2020. Brazil accounted for about 1% of total U.S. imports of fresh papayas, according to USDA trade numbers.
The USDA said the draft pest risk assessment for papaya will be available for review and comment until July 6. To view the assessment or submit comments, go to https://www.aphis.usda.gov/plant-health/risk-assessment-consultation.
