Del Fresco increases strawberry acreage
Kingsville, Ontario-based Del Fresco Produce Ltd. is expanding its greenhouse strawberry production.
During its first phase, Del Fresco will add 9 acres, increasing its total strawberry production to 10 acres, according to a news release.
The expanded acreage will be in full production by November.
“Within the past two years we decided to enter the greenhouse strawberry production as an experiment and have succeeded beyond our expectations,” Carl Mastronardi, president, said in the release.
The greenhouse uses energy curtains and grow lights to better manage the microclimate for lower costs and better fruit, according to the release. The fruit can be grown in all seasons.
“The flavor profile, sweetness level and overall consumer feedback has been overwhelming. This encouraged our team to continue with our production, brand development and expansion plans,” Mastronardi said in the release.
Del Fresco’s strawberries are marketed under the Yes!Berries brand.
The company also grows tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, beans and eggplant.
