Bushmans’ Inc. expects stable potato acreage in Wisconsin
Bushmans’ Inc. expects stable acreage for 2022, said Mike Carter, CEO of the Rosholt, Wis.-based marketer.
The company’s shed is in Plainfield in central Wisconsin, and Carter said the company grows and runs several varieties of russets, including norkotah’s, silverton’s, gold rush, caribou and a few others.
New reds, whites and yellows, as well as russets, were expected to be shipped by early August, Carter told The Packer in late July.
“Our acreage is very similar to last year, and I believe that, as a state, Wisconsin will not see any major shifts in fresh acreage harvested this year,” Carter said. “While the weather hasn’t been perfect, it has been serviceable. It was a little cold early, then we had some hot weather. But, by and large, the weather has been fine.”
The bigger concern, Carter said, is what happens between July and harvest.
“Once we get to October and everything is out of the ground, we will have a much better idea of where we stand,” he said.
