California's navel crop up 19%, USDA projects
California’s navel orange production for the 2022-23 season is forecast at 1.52 million tons (38.0 million boxes), up 19% from last season, according to the USDA.
The USDA’s initial crop forecast is based on an objective measurement survey conducted in California's Central Valley from mid-June to the beginning of September, according to the report.
The USDA’s objective measurement survey indicated that fruit set was up 47% from last year but the average fruit size was down 2% from last year.
Harvest is expected to begin in October, the report said.
