The 2022 Packer 25 is our annual tribute to 25 leaders, innovators and agents of change across the fresh produce supply chain. Each year, The Packer invites the produce industry to nominate distinguished veterans, leaders and rising stars of the fresh produce industry. As always, our editorial team was energized and awed by the talented pool of nominees this year. Now in its 18th year, The Packer is once again spotlighting 25 dynamic and inspiring people who are moving the produce industry forward.

The following has been edited for length and clarity.

Chris Romano, vice president of produce, floral and gifts at The Fresh Market, Greensboro, N.C.

Describe your current job role, where it is, and why you like it.

Romano: I work with our category managers, associate category managers and category assistants, developing and maintaining product mix and retail pricing. I create new retail programs that enhance the customer experience and add growth and profit to the company. I train team members in buying, displaying and selling fresh produce, floral and gift items.

How did you get your start in the produce industry?

I started as a clerk in a produce department at a natural store in Berkeley, Calif., in 1988. I just needed a job, and I liked shopping at the store.

Tell us about a specific challenge and how you navigated it.

Of course, the biggest has been COVID-19 [and how it impacted the] supply chain — not enough product when it first hit, and then managing logistics and cost increases for the last two years.

What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?

The 159-store produce reset that the team accomplished in 12 weeks here at The Fresh Market.

What industry organizations, boards or volunteer groups have you joined outside your job role, and why?

Austin Farmers Market advisory board (retired) and the Farmshare Austin Chair (retired).

What are some goals for the future?

Continue to support farmers and producers in any capacity and start a small farm in the Blue Ridge Mountains outside of Asheville, N.C.

Which fruit and which vegetable are almost always in your kitchen?

Berries and lettuce, but I aways have a drawer or bowl full.

Name your favorite efficiency hack.

My new Apple watch and analog. I pick up the phone to talk directly with [someone] about the issue a hand.

What’s a little-known or fun fact about you?

I spent eight years on the road from the age of five until 13, traveling every state of the continental U.S. and all provinces of Canada.
