Discount retail grocery outlets are poised to grow, a new report says.

A new research report from Coresight Research takes an in-depth look at retail discounters including Aldi, Save A Lot, Grocery Outlet and Lidl.

Called U.S. Grocery Discounters: Price Competition, the report assesses discount retail growth momentum, store expansion strategies and e-commerce initiatives, the release said.

“We expect the discount channel to outperform total U.S. grocery growth in 2022 as persistent inflation impacted consumer spending patterns and drove trading down behaviors over the year,” the authors said. “As a result of frugal shopping behaviors instigated by inflation, we believe discount channel growth will continue to outpace total growth in 2023 and beyond, supported by new store openings by Aldi, Grocery Outlet and Lidl.”

However, the authors said traditional grocery retailers hold the advantage with e-commerce platforms, so that may be an area of vulnerability for discounters.

Highlights of the report include:

  • How the discount channel performed in 2022 vs. total grocery growth.
  • Annual sales, growth stats for Aldi, Lidl and Grocery Outlet, and who came out on top.
  • Store openings for Aldi, Grocery Outlet and Lidl.
  • Store visit data March to October 2022 for Aldi, Save A Lot, Grocery Outlet and Lidl.
  • How grocery discounters are dealing with e-commerce: third-party partnerships
  • Comparing grocery discounters’ e-commerce value proposition with traditional grocery rivals such as Kroger and Albertsons
