As Popeye the sailor man might agree, spinach packs quite a punch as a nutritious leafy green vegetable.

The Packer’s Organic Fresh Trends 2023 survey is valuable to marketers and retailers seeking to answer the question, “Who is my organic consumer?” In mid-October of 2022, more than 1,000 U.S. consumers were asked about their organic purchasing habits.

Organic spinach is a big part of the overall retail spinach category. IRI retail scan data shows that organic spinach retail sales in 2021 totaled $526.3 million, up 0.4% from 2020.

With 76.9 million pounds sold for an average retail price of $6.84 per pound, organic spinach made up 50% of total retail spinach sales in 2021, IRI reports. Organic spinach also pulled its weight for total organic produce sales, representing 6.8% of total retail organic sales in 2021, IRI said.

The Packer’s Organic Fresh Trends 2023 shows 15% of consumers surveyed exclusively shop for organic spinach, down slightly from 20% in 2022 and 18% in 2021.

Thirty-nine percent of consumers surveyed by Organic Fresh Trends 2023 said they purchased organic spinach at least periodically, compared with 44% in 2022 and 36% in 2021.

Twenty-two percent of consumers with kids said they purchased organic spinach exclusively, compared with 15% for shoppers with no kids.

As with most other organic commodities, organic spinach was purchased most frequently by higher-income, younger consumers, according to Organic Fresh Trends 2023 data.
