Watermelon board lists recipe contest winners

The National Watermelon Promotion Board has named four winners in its “Use the Whole Watermelon” contest.

Four honorable mentions were also selected, according to a news release. Consumers submitted more than 125 entries.

The contest categories were flesh, juice and rind, and the winning recipes and honorable mentions will be added to the collection on watermelon.org in early 2018.

The grand prize went to Shauna Havey, Roy, Utah, for her Watermelon Rind Kimchi Burger.

Shannon Kohn, Simpsonville, S.C., received recognition for her Zesty Watermelon Chicken Salad Tortilla Cups.

Carmell Childs, Clawson, Utah, won the juice category with a recipe for Lime-Mint Watermelon Granita with No-Churn Feta Ice Cream, and Helen Fields, Paradise, Texas, topped the group that contributed rind recipes with her Roasted Watermelon Rind Parmesan.
