New York, California and Massachusetts are tops in per capita consumer interest in fruits and vegetables, according to new research.

Based on internet searches per 1,000 people, fruit and vegetables are most popular in New York, California and Massachusetts, according to the study by health and fitness website Total Shape. The study reveals the most popular fruit and vegetables across each U.S. state, according to a news release.

Total Shape used the International Fresh Produce Association’s list of the top 20 most popular fruits and the 20 most popular vegetables in the U.S. and used Google search data to examine the search volumes of fruit and vegetable per 100,000 residents in each U.S. state, the release said.

The study found New Yorkers are "most obsessed" with fruits and vegetables, showcasing 5,159 monthly searches per 100,000 people, and a total of 1,015,188 searches per month.

The survey showed apples are the most popular healthy snack in New York, followed by mangoes in second place and bananas in third.

California ranks in second as the "most obsessed," with 4,503 monthly searches per 100,000 people and a total 1,575,623 searches for fruits and vegetables per month, according to the Total Shape report.

Apples were also the most popular choice in California, followed by mangoes in second and oranges in third, according to the data.

In third, the study found Massachusetts has a total search volume of 311,500 per month and 4,461 searches per 100,000 people.

Apples were also the top choice in Massachusetts, followed by mangoes in second and bananas in third.

The study found South Dakota is the state least interested in fruits and vegetables, with just 90,9824 monthly searches per 100,000 people and a total search volume of 17,635.

The study also listed the top 10 most popular fruits and the top 10 most popular vegetables across the U.S.
