Citrus bags offer low price-point for consumers
Packaging trends are always evolving with consumers in mind.
There is an increasing interest in mandarins that are offered in a 2-pound bag, said Chuck Yow, director of U.S. sales and business development with Capesan North America, Gloucester, N.J.
Tom Cowan, sales manager with Wonderful Citrus division DNE World Fruit, Fort Pierce, Fla., said clementine packaging has changed over the past 10 years from a 5-pound box to more bags in the 2-pound, 3-pound and 5-pound sizes. This provides retailers with more flexibility to target certain price points for these fruits.
“There has also been a trend toward more navel bags in the 3-pound, 4-pound, 5-pound and 8-pound size,” Cowan said.
“There has been a big swing over the past couple of years to bags, as the consumer, in my opinion, sees this as a value buy like a bulk or wholesale item,” said Miles Fraser-Jones, director of global business development with Seven Seas Global Produce Network, Iselin, N.J.
This has helped in moving good volumes, he said.
