Mushroom Council announces Blend the Rules winners

Redwood Shores, Calif.-based Mushroom Council announced “Blend the Rules” contest winners.

Bethel School District, Spanaway, Wash., was the grand prize winner; Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union, Brandon, Vt.,  was second and Marion Elementary-Allen, Allen, Texas, was third.

“We were astounded by the quality of entries submitted to the Blend the Rules campaign,” Hayes said in the release. “This program demonstrates how school nutrition programs are serving upscale, delicious, creative meals to their students to promote the consumption of fruits and vegetables, especially mushrooms.”

Launched in January, Blend the Rules encouraged K-12 school nutrition program coordinators to submit recipes to demonstrate how their schools are creatively serving mushrooms to students, according to the release.

Chef Samantha Gasbarro of Windham-Raymond School District, Windham, Maine; Dayle Hayes of the School Meals that Rock blog;  and Bart Minor, president of Mushroom Council, judged the contest.
