Superfresh orchard update talks dirt
In Domex Superfresh Growers’ latest orchard update, chief horticulturist Dave Gleason delves into the importance of soil health for its orchards.
Gleason recently attended the International Fruit Tree Association conference in New Zealand, which focuses on current topics in the horticultural sphere, according to a news release.
At the conference, “all the growers were talking about soil and the complicated relationship between soil, air, water, and the plants and trees that grow there. We can work with the soil to accomplish excellent things,” Gleason said in the video update.
“Organic production has taught us about those interactions. We are using composted material in both organic and conventional production to encourage and stimulate soil health and beneficial organisms,” he said.
Superfresh Growers works to promote beneficial organisms in the soil that contribute to healthy, disesase-resistant trees, according the release.
In other news, the company this spring has planted a block of Cosmic Crisp trees, which should be ready to harvest in 2019.
