The U.S. Department of Agriculture said it will purchase $4.5 million of fresh oranges for distribution to various food nutrition assistance programs.

Purchases will be made to encourage the continued domestic consumption of these products by diverting them from the normal channels of trade and commerce, according to a news release from the USDA.

The release said it would be looking to purchase size 138 and larger oranges for delivery from April 17 to May 29. Solicitations will be issued soon for the purchases, according to the agency.

Deliveries are expected to be to various U.S. locations on an F.O.B. destination basis, according to the release.

Inquiries about the planned purchases can be made to contracting officer David Jackson at Davidc.jackson@ams.usda.gov
