New York-based BrightFarms plans to build a 250,000-square-foot greenhouse in Snyder County, Pa. — its second greenhouse in the state.

The packaged salad greens grower will break ground this month, according to a BrightFarms news release. The goal is to start producing in early 2020.

The greenhouse will produce more than 2 million pounds of leafy salad greens and herbs a year, to be delivered to Pennsylvania supermarkets within 24 hours of harvest, according to the release.

“With greenhouses across the Mid-Atlantic and growing, BrightFarms is well positioned to meet the growing consumer demand for local produce,” BrightFarms CEO Paul Lightfoot said in the release.

In February, BrightFarms announced plans for new greenhouse farms to be built in Massachusetts, New York and North Carolina by the end of 2019. The company currently has farms in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Illinois and Ohio. The business model for each greenhouse is to supply the surrounding urban area, shortening the supply chain.
