Foodservice company Sid Wainer & Son offers produce pop-up
UPDATED: Foodservice distributor Sid Wainer & Son, New Bedford, Mass., is having its second pop-up store to help residents access fresh fruits and vegetables.
The Food Rescue Pop-Up will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 25, according to a news release.
Cases of pre-packed produce and dairy worth $73 will be sold for $10, and includes:
- Five-pound bags of rainbow carrots;
- One-pound boxes of strawberries;
- Five-pound bags of salad mix;
- 1.5 pounds of arugula; and
- Eight avocados.
The company has a system to limit contact by allowing cars to pull up to Sid Wainer & Son trucks and pick up the cases of fresh produce. Cash and electronic benefit transfer cards will be accepted, according to the release.
The company’s first emergency food rescue pop-up March 21 in New Bedford was open 9 ½ hours, offering produce at the bargain price of $1. About 2,000 residents bought produce.
“During these challenging times, we must stick together and provide support to stay healthy, eat well, and be well,” Allie Wainer said in a news release. “For over 100 years, the Sid Wainer & Son family has been here for our community, and while we navigate the changing food environment, it is our duty to provide fresh product to our community.”
Items included five-pound bags of carrots, three pounds of cauliflower florets and three pounds of salad mix.
As restaurants temporarily close because of the spread of CoVID-19 cases, foodservice distributors are finding other outlets for their inventory.Baldor Specialty Foods, Bronx, N.Y., is selling and delivering produce directly to consumers.
