United Fresh opens applications for community grants program

The United Fresh Start Foundation is asking for applications for the 2020 Community Innovation Grants Program.

The program funds initiatives by businesses and non-profit groups to boost children’s access and consumption of fresh produce outside the traditional school day, according to a news release.

“We’re proud of the investment we’ve been able to make in communities over the last three years, granting $100,000 in projects that get fresh produce to kids,” Phil Muir, president and CEO of Muir Copper Canyon Farms, and chairman of the United Fresh Start Foundation, said in the release.

A total of $50,000 will be awarded, with a minimum of five grants anticipated.

Applications are due by Dec. 1. Recipients will be announced at the 2020 FreshStart Conference, Jan. 14-16 in Tucson, Ariz.

Organizations interested in applying can submit applications at www.unitedfreshstart.org, according to the release.

“With only 1 in 10 Americans consuming the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables, we are seeking new strategies that not only secures access, but also ensures that, once available, children and parents are choosing and ultimately consuming fresh produce,” Tom Stenzel, United Fresh president and CEO, said in the release. “This program complements the work we do in schools and enables us to nurture an environment where kids have access to produce everywhere they live, learn and play.”
