United Fresh to address inequalities of opportunity after protests

The United Fresh Produce Association will address the inequality of opportunity in the industry, a collaboration with a U.S. Chamber of Commerce initiative following the death of George Floyd and resulting nationwide protests.

“We stand shoulder to shoulder with others in the business community working to listen, learn and address the challenges of inequality,” Tom Stenzel, United Fresh president and CEO, said in a news release.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce plans to have public discussions across the country and through all industry sectors by leveraging its trade associations and state and local groups, according to the release.

“The senseless death of George Floyd has called renewed attention to the inequality and injustice in America,” Suzanne Clark, U.S. Chamber of Commerce president, said in the release.

The protests against police brutality and systemic racism have spurred these business leaders to hold candid discussions on the problems and solutions, according to the national business association.

The publicized police violence against U.S. citizens in recent years, combined with the COVID-19 pandemic and economic crisis, have disproportionately hit people of color, making this problem worse, according to the release.

“The Chamber believes that the moral case for greater diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace is indisputable,” Clark said in the release. “We call on all business leaders to join us in creating equality in opportunity for all Americans.”
